The Story of Ganesh Chaturthi
How Lord
Ganesha Was Born
According to
a popular Hindu tradition, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the
sacred paste of sandalwood and turmeric used during her bath. She gave him life
and instructed him to guard the entrance while she bathed.
Ganesha
faithfully followed his mother's command.
When Lord Shiva returned and wished to enter, Ganesha stopped him, not knowing that he was his father. A confrontation followed, and in the course of the conflict, Shiva severed Ganesha's head with his Trishul.
When Parvati learned what had happened, she was overcome with grief and anger. She requested that Ganesha be brought back to life.
Lord Shiva then instructed his Ganas to bring the head of the first living being they encountered, with its head facing north. They returned with the head of an elephant.
Shiva placed the elephant's head upon Ganesha's body and restored him to life.
He then blessed Ganesha and declared that he would be worshipped before all other gods and before every auspicious undertaking.
Thus, Ganesha became as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and Pratham Pujya, the first deity to be worshipped.

days, devotees offer prayers, perform aarti, prepare prasad and participate in
cultural and devotional activities.
Day 1:
Ganesh Sthapana
The festival
begins with the installation of Shri Ganesha. The idol is welcomed into the
home or pandal with devotion, flowers, durva grass, modak and other traditional
offerings.
Days 2–10:
Daily Worship and Aarti
Devotees
perform daily puja and aarti. Many families observe special prayers, bhajans
and community celebrations.
These days
provide an opportunity to spend time in devotion and seek the blessings of
Vighnaharta.
Day 11:
Ganesh Visarjan
The festival
concludes with Ganesh Visarjan, when devotees respectfully immerse the
idol in water.
The familiar
chant:
“गणपति बप्पा मोरया, अगले बरस तू जल्दी आ!”
expresses
both devotion and the hope of welcoming Lord Ganesha again.
The
Spiritual Meaning of Ganesh Visarjan
Ganesh Visarjan carries a profound message.
The idol is
created from earthly elements, worshipped with love and eventually returned to
nature. This reminds us of the eternal cycle of creation, preservation and
dissolution.
