Mandir and Puja Room directions
Do not place your mandir directly on the floor. Instead, keep it on a raised platform or pedestal. “The temple should be made of marble or wood. Ensure that you do not have multiple idols of the same God or Goddess.
God figures in any form idol or photos placed in the temple should never
be damaged (खंडित), as it considered is inauspicious.
Adequate space should be there in Pooja
Room so that during special pooja the entire family can sit and pray together.
The temple area should have good ventilation so that proper flow of energy will
be there. Puja room should always be neat and clean, free from clutter or
unused items.
I have observed that due to scarcity of area as in urban
areas we have limitations people use to place there mandir in bedroom or even
in kitchen. In such cases, hang a curtain or cover the front of the temple,
when you are not using the temple. Also, when placing a temple in the kitchen
or bedroom, consider that area as a sub mandal and reserve the northeast corner
for it. Ideally, the idol should not be more than 10 inches.
Temple should not be against a wall that has a toilet
behind it or a toilet on the upper floor. Mandir should have a dome
structure on its top and ensure that the entry towards the pooja room has a
threshold. Below the mandir or near the mandir
create a small shelf, so that incense, pooja materials and holy books can be
placed in it. Do not place anything above the mandir.
Simple Do’s
1. Ground floor is the best location for Pooja Room.
2. North-east is the best direction.
3. Face north or east while praying.
4. Silver, brass or copper vessels are preferred.
5. Use light and soothing colors.
Simple Avoids
1. Puja room should not be under the staircase.
2. Idols should not be kept facing each other.
3. Puja room should not be against a bathroom.
4. Avoid placing a mandir in your bedroom.
The temple should give you a feeling of serenity and calmness.
